Spring Plant Fair

By Janene Carey

It’s time to mark your calendar for the biggest horticultural event on the Mid North Coast, Bellingen’s Spring Plant Fair, to be held on the second Saturday of September…

Coordinator Clayton Colmer said coming along was an important first step towards setting up your backyard for self-sufficiency.

“It’s a great way to welcome in the new season, get back out into the garden and be generating your own food, which is quite a movement these days,” he said.

With about a hundred stallholders selling a huge range of tropical, sub-tropical, native, exotic and edible species, Bellingen Park will be glowing with greenery and flowers, a cornucopia of living, growing things.

Everything you need for your garden, including fruit trees, flowering shrubs, vegetable seedlings, herbs, native tube stock, succulents, ferns, nest boxes, furniture, equipment, supplies and
information will be available in abundance, along with plenty of tasty things to eat and drink.

Musical entertainment will be provided by home-grown locals Saije (Shanteya and Jo), an award – winning, contemporary folk duo who specialise in soulful harmonies, dynamic guitar-lines and heartfelt stories.

The Bellingen Growers’ Market will also be in attendance on the Park Street side, with fresh, ready-to-eat produce from local suppliers.

Held twice a year, in Autumn and Spring, this much-loved community event has been operating for 30 years as a major fundraiser for the Bellingen Environment Centre, organised and run by volunteers.

Clayton said he has his fingers crossed that our region will stay lockdown-free.

“We won’t plough on regardless, but we want to keep the plant fair going,” he said. “We’re entering our fourth decade and we’re here for the long haul.”

The autumnal fair went ahead in March this year, but the previous September one had to be cancelled due to COVID-19.

COVID-safe measures will be in place again this time, with people requested to check in using QR codes and observe social distancing.

Members of the community are invited to sign up for a two-hour shift as a volunteer, which not only allows you to feel part of the joy, but also earns you a free lunch and a free plant. Just email your interest to bellingenplantfair@gmail.com and include your mobile number and full name.

Sponsored by Kombu, Hearthfire and Shades of Green Landscape supplies, the Spring Plant Fair will run from 8am to 2pm on Saturday the 11th of September at Bellingen Market Park.
