River Sounds Festival | 19+21 Aug

After three false starts, River Sounds is finally here! taking place at the Bellingen Showgrounds on 19-21 August, the 3 day event features some of Australia’s biggest artists and brightest emerging talent. Let’s dive in and take a look at the ‘must do’s’ at the event…

The inaugural River Sounds festival will be opened by the highly respected Gumbaynggirr cultural leader and language educator, Uncle Michael ‘Micklo’ Jarrett. Micklo will deliver his passionate Welcome to Country, joined by Bellingen Shire local and rising Aboriginal dance star Codi Denham and the Bellingen High School Aboriginal Dance Group. During their dance performance, Gumbaynggirr visual artist Bernard Kelly-Edwards will have his stunning artwork displayed on the main stage big screen. When: Main Stage, Saturday, 2.45pm.

River Sounds has been designed as an all-weather event. The Main Stage is covered by a massive big top tent, big enough to cover the entire crowd attending the event. The Boiler Room stage is indoors (and air-conditioned!) within the Showground Pavilion. Plus, the bar area is covered by a huge stretch tent, to keep you
comfortable while you keep yourself hydrated.  Rain, hail or shine, River Sounds is on baby!

Well, the lineup is mind blowing! You could hang out at the main stage all day and not be disappointed. Obviously the headliners Baker Boy, Regurgitator, Butterfingers and Alex The Astronaut are the big ticket artists you have to see. Here’s a few of our other artist picks that you don’t want to miss:

Dallas Woods: Dallas is widely regarded as one of the best rappers in the country. A Noongar man raised in Wyndham, East Kimberley, Dallas is the quintessential underdog. After dropping out of school at age 14, Dallas developed the uncanny ability to find humour in the most unlikely places. Poverty, suicide, abuses of all kinds are a common theme in his life yet its relentless exposure has provided him with the mettle to cut-through society’s demons so he can apply words to his tsunami of feelings and thoughts. When: Main Stage, Friday, 7.35pm

The Lazy Eyes: Sydney psy-rockersThe Lazy Eyes have just returned home after a sold out run of shows to rave reviews in the UK. Sitting somewhere between the sounds of world beaters Tame Impala and the more explosive rock outputs from King Gizz, The Lazy Eyes will take you on a sonic journey to the mystic realms of goodness. When: Main Stage, Saturday, 4.45pm

Any of you old heads out there know the Boiler Room was synonymous with the Big Day Out in the 90’s and early 2000’s. River Sounds is bringing it back and has enlisted some of the big guns of Australian electronic music to deliver the beats. Do not miss the godfather’s of turntablism Phil Smart and Simon Caldwell. When: Phil Smart, Friday 9.30pm. Simon Caldwell, Saturday 9.30pm

A stage dedicated to showcase the best local talent has been added to the event and features stacks of legends including Rear Wheel Drive, The Nikki’s, and Black Pallas to name a few.

Make a weekend of it and camp on-site at the Bellingen Showgrounds. Head to www.bellingenshowgroudns.com.au for details.

Do not eat before you come to River Sounds! Food is a plenty at the Festival with street vendors dishing up everything from paella, tacos, curries, Middle Eastern BBQ, pizzas and stacks more delicious goods.

The Coopers Beer Garden is a huge space, partly covered offering shade and protection from the rain, heaps of seating and a big service area to avoid long queues. Makes one thirsty just thinking about it!

River Sounds is offering a bus service between Coffs Harbour and Bellingen on both days of the event. Tickets are only $5 each way and can be purchased when purchasing your festival tickets. Limited car parking is available on-site at the Bellingen Showgrounds via the Black St entrance.
